He has won Nebula Awards for his short stories "Story of Your Life" (1999) and "Tower of Babylon" (1990), & two the Nebulthe and a Hugo Award for his novellette "Hell Is the Absence of God" (2001). He turned down the Hugo nomination for "Liking What You See: A Documentary". His story "Seventy-Two Letters" received a Sidewise Award for Alternate History.
